Hanging Floral Installation in Chicago: 600 Real Roses Over a Parisian Party
This hanging floral installation in Chicago put 600 real red roses on the ceiling of a Parisian-themed party, each rose suspended upside-down on its own stem so the blooms hang at head height over the room. Chicago Flower Wall shared the photograph on January 2, 2025, looking back on the event as one of its most unforgettable of the year behind it — the canopy turns a long, narrow room into a walk-through garden that guests stand inside rather than in front of.
A Ceiling You Walk Under, Not a Wall You Stand Against
Almost every floral piece in the rental catalog works vertically, at camera height, behind the people being photographed. This one works overhead. The roses hang in rows across the full length of the room, dense enough near the camera that individual blooms fill the top of the frame, thinning into a red haze at the far wall. Their green stems and leaves form a second, softer ceiling above the blooms, so the installation reads as an inverted garden rather than a chandelier — there is no fixture, no frame, and nothing metallic anywhere in it.
Hanging each rose bloom-down is what makes the count believable. Six hundred stems is a wholesale order, not a garland, and the photograph shows the labor in the spacing: no two blooms collide, the rows hold their lines the length of the room, and the heads sit at varied heights so the canopy has depth instead of a flat plane. Guests at the far end stand under the same density as the desserts at the near end. The room was decorated everywhere, not just at a photo spot.
Paris, by Way of the Walls
The theme around the roses is drawn, literally. Oversized fashion sketches line both walls — elongated figures in dresses, a woman's face in profile at the right edge of the frame — and at the far end an Eiffel Tower sketch rises behind a white café table and two scrolled chairs, with a black lamppost prop completing the street-corner vignette. Against that monochrome artwork, the red overhead is the only saturated color in the room besides the dessert counters, and it pulls the whole theme together: Paris in line drawing below, roses in fact above.
The counters deserve a glance too. The right-hand cabinets carry tiered desserts, berries, and pastries the length of the room, with a tall red arrangement in a red vase marking the halfway point — the one ground-level floral echo of the ceiling. It is a useful reminder that an installation this size still has to share a room with food service, seating, and a walkway, and here the walkway stays completely clear because everything floral is either overhead or against a wall.
When the Ceiling Is the Right Surface
A hanging installation solves a specific problem: a room with no good wall. Long, narrow spaces, galleries, and rooms whose walls are already carrying art — as these were — leave a backdrop nowhere to go. The ceiling is the one surface that is always empty. The trade-off is that the piece cannot be posed against; it is atmosphere, not a photo backdrop, and events that need a portrait station pair it with a ground-level piece, the way a flower wall backdrop rental anchors one end of a room or a flower arch rental frames a ceremony. The original post tags the event Barrington, in Chicago's northwest suburbs, and the format travels anywhere the ceiling structure allows the hang.
